What is the difference between the two types of life monitors?

Is there an actual difference between the regular life monitor and the advanced one? Is it all just for show or does the advanced life monitor serve some extra purpose, like heart monitoring?

From what I have seen the main difference is cost and that the advanced ones are required in some rooms (like ICU beds) I believe. Also, the advanced hangs from the ceilings, so you can actually put a window behind it if you so choose.
