[NEED MORE INFO] Cannot load .xml file
Wed Jul 08, 2020 10:24 pm
Hey,
I'm new to the game and I absolutely love it.
I got a lot done in one binge session and then on the next day, I tried to load my own save file but it didn't work. After a while on the loading screen, I return to the main menu with a red text in the upper left corner saying: "Unexpected end of file, Current depth is 9 Line 432331, Position 36."
Before that I had no problems loading an .xml file, the only thing changed over night was an update to the most recent version. I had no problems with mods before, although I've loaded a few, including the new DLC.
Loading a .zip file, however, (the autosaves, for example) is not a problem. The last autosave was just very inconvenient so that I would lost a day of progress if I'd play with the last autosave.
I tried to put the .xml file into an own .zip file but that didn't work either.
I looked up other bug reports, but I only found people stating that they had problems loading the .zip file and not the .xml file. For me, however, it's vice versa.
The log and the map is in the appendix.
Thanks for helping!

HI, thanks for the report and welcome to the forum!
I'm very sorry, but unfortunately it looks like the last save didn't get written completely and maybe a half is missing - normally you'd end up with a zip file including the xml, preview screenshot and a couple of extra files, but it looks like something interrupted the save process. As we haven't seen anything similar recently - do you by any chance remember if there was anything out of the ordinary at the end of you last play session? Also, could you check how much available space you have on your main drive? Thanks in advance and sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the fast reply!
That's interesting to hear. Apparently, there is no possible solution in bringing back the files, right?
The main drive should have enough storage.
I remember when saving the file, I got no feedback from the game after I pressed the "Save" button: It just stayed in the frame and didn't go back to the game as usual. I then looked whether it really saved the game and then I saw the (corrupted) .xml file in the loading frame. Of course, I thought that it succesfully saved and left the game. What's interesting is that after my first session with this map, I saved the game and the save file was later corrupted as well. But on the next day it successfully loaded and I could play with it. I don't know if I have loaded a .zip or a .xml file at the beginning of the second session. So something during the second session corrupted the map files...
I loaded an old autosave, saved it again and now it got saved in a usual .zip file again so now there's no problem with loading anymore. Just quite a pity losing a day of progress...
Strange! I will now set the autosaving to a higher frequency because this made no problems at all.
If I have problems with saving and loading the map again, I will let you know
Thanks again

Hi, thanks a lot for the details - it definitely looks like something went wrong already when saving - it could be related to one of the mods or caused by a rare bug in the game, so yes, I'd definitely recommended saving more often or using the autosave as you mentioned.
If the game ever locks up like that again, the log file from that session should have some more info about what exactly went wrong and we'd be of course happy to have a look.
