Awaiting test results

Hi have another question. This time about sending patients to the labs for testing. They go, they drop off their samples, some will then sit there and wait for results, others return to the doctor and then sit in the doctors office doing nothing.
Why do they come back to an office? How can I stop them? If the patient is active I can't get them to go and sit in the waiting room or to go back the lab waiting area so they potentially become stuck in the office. If there's no other active examinations I can perform I end up having to send them away and lose the patient.
